Home

I like to be
The first one home
In the afternoon
To find the house
Silently waiting.

The books rest on the shelf,
Leaning gently to the left.
The table holds the candlestick
Benevolently in its palm,
The chairs drawn up close,
In quiet concern.

The kitchen cabinets hold their goods,
Never questioning their weighty purpose.
The refrigerator rumbles now and again
To care for its fragile contents.

The bed yawns sleepily in its room,
The dresser and mirror,
Its dusty companions.

The afternoon sun
Streams in, glowing warmth,
And the sounds outside the window,
The wind and train and passing cars,
Sing a comforting lullaby.

I sit for a while,
Letting go of my day
And absorbing theirs.
I honor their silences,
They welcome my presence.
We wait together
For the first hints of evening.

  1. Another great poem with a fitting and beautiful photo. You have started something here, and if you ever stop, there will be a hole in the life of certain readers. Thank you!

    1. Aw,Paul. I never quite know when I hit that “publish” button- it is a little nerve wracking. So thank you for entering the blogosphere and commenting!!

  2. Maria, your poetry never fails to stir emotions in me that I had somehow lost or forgotten. And you and Mike always seem to find the perfect complement to your words with the photos. Thank you again for sharing.

    1. Thank you, Teresa. I have a lot of fun going through all of his photos, trying to find just the right one. Sometimes, I ask him to take a new one, but most of the time, there is already something that fits pretty well. I am lucky to have my own live-in photographer!!

  3. Maria-this brings new eyes and appreciation to me and my world. I enjoy that same feeling… being the first home. But this challenges me now to find a way to articulate the feelings I feel, and find quiet joy. Now I will have to, in turn, journal.

PLUS, your personal images add so much… thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. Yeah!!! Gosh, if this poem encourages you to write in your own journal, I feel like it has done its job!!! That happens to me often- I read poetry and it makes me want to write. Not necessarily about the same topic, but about some feeling that the poem inspired. It might lead me in a whole new direction. I just love that!

  4. Maria- I too enjoy the quiet of being the first one home… and now I am challenged to articulate my own feelings- with new eyes of appreciation, inspired by your poem.

AND, I love your personal images that inspire your writings.
    🙂

  5. Maria,
You have captured the soul of your home
Mike’s pictures have been waiting for your words.

    1. Aw, thank you, Marian. That is a beautiful thought. It really is fun to figure out a way to put them together.

  6. Oh yes, Maria, that is a special time. Thank you for claiming it. Your words and image have successfully captured it and sent me there.
