Thank You, Dear Body

Thank You, Dear Body

Thank you, dear body,
for embracing my spirit
so steadfastly,
for the unfaltering rhythm
of breath and heartbeat
all these many years.

Thank you, dear body,
for drawing all you need
from food and air and water,
for sending it on the long journey
through artery and capillary
to cell and tissue.
Thank you for each organ’s
unique contribution to the whole,
the perfect metaphor for community.

Microcosm within microcosm,
I marvel at the intricate complexity,
functioning beyond my consciousness.

Thank you, dear body,
for the evolving phases-
infancy, childhood, puberty
and now this long unfolding adulthood.
Thank you especially
for the exquisite mystery
of pregnancy and birth.
You are truly a wonder of creation.

Thank you, dear body,
for walking me through the days,
joyous and difficult,
for navigating
the ever-changing landscapes.
Adapting,
always adapting.

Thank you, dear body,
for enduring the toxins,
both physical and mental,
to which you are subjected.
You take it all in stride,
doing your best
to heal the hurts,
determined to persevere.

Thank you, dear body,
for serving me so well.
You are a miracle of efficiency.

In gratitude, I promise you
fresh air,
long walks,
nourishing foods,
sleep,
peaceful thoughts,
challenges,
hugs,
and comfortable shoes.

  2. Thank you, dear poet, for reminding us that we, too, are walking miracles.
Thank you, dear poet, for sharing your long unfolding adulthood with us. We not only benefit from our own retirements; we gain from yours.
And thank you, dear poet, for the dose of humor thrown in also.
